Mordecai was the son of Jair,[1] nephew or nephew-in-law to Abihail, and cousin and later adoptive father of Esther.[2] Kish, his great-grandfather was was a surviving exile Israelite from the city of Jerusalem,[3] when it was plundered and its inhabitants were moved to Babylon. Eventually the nation of Persia overtook the nation of Babylon, gaining authority over the Jewish captives of Babylon. At one point Mordecai lived in the Persian fortress capital of Susa[1], where he raised Esther, and discovered and thwarted a plot from King Ahasuerus's advisor Haman to commit genocide against the Jewish people.
