Sapphira was the wife of Ananias, who in Acts chapter 5 sold a piece of land and kept back part of the price, with Sapphira also knowing about it, laying it at the apostles' feet, presumably claiming it was the entire amount. (At the time, believers would sell possessions and give the proceeds to the apostles for distributing to those in need.[1]) Peter confronted Ananias about his deceit, stating that Ananias had lied to the Holy Spirit. Upon hearing Peter's word, Ananias fell down and died.[2] Three hours later, Ananias' wife, Sapphira came, unaware of her husband's death, and was questioned by Peter. She also lied about the price the land sold for, whereupon she died the same way as Ananias.[3]
