Simeon was the second son of Jacob and Leah. He was born in Padan Aram near Haran in the 18th century BC. He was the great-grandson of Abraham and the progenitor to the tribe by his name.
When he was about 30 years old, he and his brother Levi killed all the men at Shechem after the son of the town's chief raped their sister Dinah. This act of violence lost favor with Jacob, causing both to be passed over as heirs to the messianic promise.
